ASUS C434 Full HD 14 Inch Touchscreen ChromeBook (Intel M3-8100Y Processor, 128 GB eMMC, 4 GB RAM, 360 Degree Full HD Rotatable NanoEdge…

Description

  • Powered by Intel’s latest Core M3-8100Y Processor
  • The ASUS Chromebook Flip C434 leverages ASUS NanoEdge display technology to squeeze a 14″ Full HD touchscreen display into a 13″ chassis. The bezels on either side have been shrunk down to a scant 5mm, so they all but disappear when streaming video or engrossed in a project
  • With 1.4mm of key travel, crisp, clean feedback from the keys, and a backlight for working late into the night, the keyboard first introduced on the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 is legendary. The full-size chicklet keyboard on the Chromebook Flip C434 feels just as good
  • A picture is worth a thousand words, though, and for more artistic endeavors or creative pursuits, the 360° hinge and touchscreen display make flipping into tablet mode easy and quick
  • There are two USB Type-C (USB-C) ports, as well as a standard USB Type-A port for peripherals. The USB-C ports are fully functioning, which means they can be used for data transfer, hooking up to an external display, or for power delivery. Finally, the 48Wh battery saves users from constantly searching for an outlet to plug into everywhere they go

A big step up from my previous Chromebook. This really feels like a premium product.

The screen is astounding, like it’s floating in the air. The keyboard feels perfect. I prefer the back-lighting to be off if I use it on my lap and on if I use it on a desk as it works best if you are looking at it from above rather than at an angle.

The trackpad is probably the best I have used – extremely smooth and accurate.

Asus have come up with a real winner here.

Bought for home use, browsing, etc. Really pleased there is a lot of storage on-board plus the micro-SD slot. Four gig of memory seems to be enough for my needs, if I start to think I need more I will upgrade when that time arrives. The screen is very good and big for the chassis, only slight downside is it’s glossy so you get reflections. But its very easy to adjust screen brightness and volume, plus the sound quality is decent. Read somewhere about the silver/lighty-up keyboard being difficult to see the letters, but once you adjust the lighty-up brightness (using the – key combo!) this is not a problem.
Still learning my way around it. Seems there are lots of keyboard shortcuts worth learning. I think that some users may get confused over the difference between Chromebook apps, Chrome browser extensions and the Android apps. The the inclusion of the latter, while not being perfectly implemented yet for many apps, is an absolute boon and makes the ‘book doubly useful. Don’t like…

I received mine today in the south of France, precisely 24 hours after I ordered it from Amazon UK (I hate AZERTY keyboards). What can I say? It’s so much better than I imagined it would be. I won’t repeat what everyone else has said so far except to say that anyone reading this hesitantly can take my word for it, you won’t be disappointed. Oh and the 1 star review I read while trying to decide whether this was a good buy or not is complete rubbish!

    ** Edit (December 2020):
I still love this machine after 20 months. Have been using it a lot over the pandemic period as it’s much lighter than the 16-inch Macbook Pro I switched to (from Windows) a while back for the more demanding stuff. As with all tech (at least mine), once the initial novelty wears off, the tendency is for it to get tossed around with a lot less care, and this Chromebook is no exception. Apart from a few scratches, it’s as good now as it was on Day 1 – stood up to the knocks very well. The only change I would make to my original review below is to say that the trackpad really grew on me with use. Not quite as good as the Mac, and obviously smaller, but nevertheless still precise, extremely comfortable and easy on the joints (compared to a lot of PC laptops I have used over the years).

    **Original post (from April 2019):
The screen is great – sharp, bright and with good contrast – very comfortable to use outside on a bright sunlit day. Don’t believe one of the…

As a pure ChromeOS device, it’s great. However, it’s currently less good if, like me, you also want to run Android apps. I want to run the Android app versions of Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, as I wish to download to the device for when I’m travelling. The Prime Video app kind of works, but the video playback is poor – choppy video and audio to the point it gets annoying and unwatchable, even if you only choose ‘good’ video quality (which isn’t that great). The Netflix app is not currently available for this model – apparently Netflix considers it an unsupported device, and doesn’t allow it to be downloaded from the Play store. This should get fixed in due course, I imagine, and in the interim, it’s possible to side-load it if you are willing to download the app from an alternative source (which I am not). On the plus side, the Google Play Movies app seems to work well.
