This really is an excellent little box of tricks. I’ve got an 11-year-old Skoda Octavia, so no Bluetooth (or even any built-in USB ports) here! I can happily report that Echo Auto works brilliantly via the AUX-in port without a hitch. Because I can now stream virtually every radio station under the sun keeping the stereo set to AUX IN is no problem at all.

Setup via the Alexa app was a breeze, everything just worked out of the box. Mine is paired with an Honor 10 phone running Android 10.

The physical hardware provided to mount the device to a vent is very good indeed – no worries about it coming loose when you rattle over a pothole – and the magnetic attachment system makes it quick and easy to remove the Echo device and take it with you or put it out of sight. The supplied AUX lead was a little short for my setup (the AUX port is hidden under the armrest) so I couldn’t mount it to a face-level vent with the cable. I have ordered a 2m stereo cable which will do the trick.

    In use,…

ย The success and failure of the Echo Auto is largely going to depend on how deeply you find yourself within Amazonโ€™s Alexa ecosystem. If youโ€™re new to Alexa, and/or donโ€™t have a generous data plan on your mobile phone, youโ€™re perhaps not going to get the most out of the Echo Auto. However, if you have the necessary resources and fondness of all things Alexa then maybe Echo Auto can be the ideal next step for you.

To enjoy the best experience, youโ€™re really going to need to have a plan for your mobile phone that has a significant data allowance. Naturally it will depend on how often youโ€™re in the car and how much you plan to stream content. My wife and I both have unlimited data on our iPhones so I donโ€™t need to be watching the megabytes rise in our case, but I would advise caution if youโ€™re on a limited plan. Additionally, youโ€™re going to ideally have a music streaming account. Several are compatible with the Echo Auto, as they…

As a big Echo fan, with them stationed all around the house… I so wanted to love this! First disappointment is that it only comes with an air vent mount. There is no included basic stick on mount, which is rubbish if you have a BMW mini, as it won’t fit on the vents. In all the videos on YouTube it also shows a stick on mount, which would have been perfect. Next, it would not connect to my phone or the app… Tried it three times…. Keeping in mind I set these things up in my sleep normally… So, sadly, packed back up and heading back for a refund. I will stick to my current solution of a echo input connected to a wireless network dongle…

Update… Decided to try and fashion my own cupholder mount using my finest Blue Peter tool kit, some black foam, rubber bands and a toilet roll… And it’s in the car! Found out that you have to disconnext your Bluetooth from your hands free kit… Then it will connect… And once it does… it works pretty well.
    Please Amazon… Release the…

WARNING: useless for navigation! Do not buy if you expect to be able to say ‘alexa, get directions to… (postcode, street name, favorite address, village, etc.) Asking for directions for anywhere except major towns and large business chains results in “sorry, I don’t know that one”.

Why not? It’s not hard surely. It won’t even navigate to UK postcodes and this is supposed to be a feature. And why let you save favorite locations in the Alexa app if you can’t then navigate to them?

I’ve tried setting my default navigation app to both Maps and Waze but it doesn’t make any difference. It appears Alexa itself is the weak link. Very bizarre.

Shame, as I had high hopes for this as I’m a big Alexa fan at home. The only thing it does well is play music, but 50 pounds for a voice music selection interface is a bit steep.
