I’ve been using GL.iNet products including the Mango, USB MicroRouter and Slate 750S for some years now. The open architecture and ability to add functionality via the underpinning of the Linux O/S is invaluable. Due to a cat related incident, one of my Slate 750S’s bit the dust so I bought the Slate AX as a replacement.
Now, I had used the original Slate in a number of environments, it was truly pocket sized, USB as low as 5V 1A could power it and it was a very capable bit of kit, once you added OpenSSH server, TOR, Wireguard etc to it… ๐
The new Slate AX however is, no matter what the title says, NOT pocket sized, unless you have trousers that have a very roomy, bellowed cargo pocket.
In addition, unless you have a USB-C charger that is AT LEAST 20W output, forget about using it.
20W will get it up and running, 18W …. not powering up. Not a graceful, lower power output, runs a bit slower, it won’t power up at all, so be aware that you can’t run this off a laptop or desktop…

One of the standout features of the GL-AXT1800 is its ability to connect to up to 120 devices simultaneously. With MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology, it ensures efficient and stable connections for all your devices. I tested it with multiple devices, including my personal computer, tablet, and smart television, and the performance was exceptional. Streaming 4K videos, online gaming, and browsing the internet were seamless and lag-free.
In terms of security, the GL-AXT1800 does not disappoint. It supports IPV6, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, making it compatible with over 30 VPN service providers. With Cloudflare encryption, your…

I bought this after trying both the Mango GL-MT300N-V2 Mini Smart Router
and the Beryl (GL-MT1300), progressively upgrading until I got the performance I needed. Ultimately I’m running my home router (Netgear NightHawk) as an OpenVPN server and wanted a travel router to connect to this as a VPN client routing all my traffic through my home internet connection.
What I found was that the bottleneck in this setup was the travel router’s processor speed. The mango has something a single core 560mhz processor, the beryl a dual core 880mhz and this one a quad core 1.2ghz processor. It made all the difference.
I have a home connection with ~50Mbs upload and was only getting 3Mbs down on the Mango and around 10Mbs on the Beryl. With this I was achieving up to 40Mbs, which is pretty close to my actual upload speed of my home connection (which is the hard bottleneck of a setup like this). So I’d highly recommend this if you’re looking for some proper speed.
It also supports wireguard which is…

Much quicker discovering media for DLNA than lower models like the Beryl.

This was very easy to setup which can be done either by phone app or web interface. Both are simple enough. I added a vpn onto the device so I don’t need vpn software on my pc any more or any other device routed through this either by ethernet or wifi, which is good.
The single most bit I love the most is the ad blocking which is built in. regular firmware updates gives me piece of mind with regard to online security. It works flawlessly and brings much welcomed relieve from ads!! Well worth the money!
