This was my first Makita 18v power tool and I have been really pleased with it. So useful and convenient. Is light and feels well balanced, well made with quality materials. Has had heavy use and done all that I have reasonably asked of it.
Have since bought several other Makita 18v tools after good experience with this small drill.

Guys! Just had to write a review on that one.

I looked around for a while trying to figure out what the model numbers actually stand for. Even Makita themselves aren’t very clear on their website. So had to go by what the other Amazon users were saying.

And I have to absolutely concur, this item is a beast. And I mean a beast. I’ve a small 18v sds and a brushless impact driver from Makita. Their both really, really good.

But this drill is on another level still. It’s true what some people are saying about broken wrists.

Be very careful on using from the box because this thing can cause damage both to yourself and the material.

It’s very small and just neat and looks and feels quality. At 90 quid it’s not the cheapest but worth the expense for daily use at work.

I apologise for maybe sounding a bit like a fanboy but I think it may now be getting me too!

Well balanced to hold and nice grip. Good brightness work light. However there are always a couple of small niggles with Makita, mainly these brushless ranges in that the speed control is not fully linear. There are a few steps in the speed control which it annoying when doing delicate work. There worst offenders are the cordless SDS where it makes chasing soft block almost impossible unless you are a butcher anyway.

Could do with a magnet on the side for holding screws bits etc that even the cheapest of the cheap drills have nowadays.

I’d also say that the gearbox thumb lever is a bit stiff and I’m hoping some use will help it. Cant move it with gloves on currently.

I have build my entire tool kit on the Makita platform so I have certain expectations!
Let me first say that the drill arrived on time, well packaged with no visible signs of any damage.
I am very impressed with this little drill. The brushless motor provides ample power and torque. Just to test it out I drilled out a mortise lock for a fire door! I ate through the door without even struggling a little and didn’t flatten the battery. Its fairly small in the hand & lightweight but I can tell its very well built. I would think this is definitely fit for professional use, but at a DIY price – Makita Quality!

  5. Mart-in

I am a tradesman for 35 years and mostly use Makita tools. I have not given 5 Star rating because the speed selector is very poor when I engage the low speed unless it is pushed forward โ€œFullyโ€ and I mean fully! Millimetre perfect It does not engage and the gears donโ€™t mesh. The motor is powerful but far noisier than the brushed versions. In every other respect a fine tool.

Bought this to do some DIY at home. It’s massively overpowered for what I need it for and performed every task from drilling to screwing and holesaw cutting with ease. It’s also found a new life as a polishing drill to keep my motorbike exhaust pipes nice and shiny.

Would i recommend you buy this drill? Hell yes. It’s expensive when you add up the cost of batteries and a charger, but it’ll last for years. Definitely worth the money

My third Makita LXT combi drill and all of them suffer from poor design in one key area. I have several Makita 18v nicad combi drills and with them if I wanted hammer action to drill bricks I selected it. If I wanted to drill metal I selected non hammer drilling. Never have I had to drill metal in hammer mode.
My LXT drills (459/485/484) all have the same modes but each of these drills have hammer action present when drilling small holes in metal, even though non-hammer is selected. My small drill bits (2mm) tend to wear out quickly because they are being hammered to death. I can move from non-hammer to hammer just by varying the pressure I apply to the drill. To drill smalls holes in aluminium say, needs light pressure to prevent overheating, yet this is when I experience hammer action.
I sent my 459 drill back to Makita UK and they replaced the gearbox foc and returned it. I then tried it and no improvement. I did a video of my returned 459 drill clearly demonstrating the hammer…

Solid hammer drill / screwdriver / drill.

Really powerful, makes my old 10.8v Bosch feel like a little weedy tool.

Easy to change bits, and the power this thing has, wow. Drills into brick no problem.

One thing to note, it feels a little heavy, and off balance with my 5.0Ah battery. Weight and balance would be much improved with a 3.0Ah or 2.0Ah. Still plenty of capacity in those batteries though.
