I can’t express how excited I was to get my hands on this camera, after all, it has an incredible focal range equivalent to that of a 24mm – 3000mm lens! I only have a 300mm lens for my full frame camera and the closest I could get would be 800mm if I wanted to spend ยฃ3000 on the 100-400mm GMaster lens with a 2x teleconverter; that’s still 2200mm short of what the Nikon P1000 has to offer.

General camera and performance were better than I expected. Everything is generally an all round notch up from the P900. Display and viewfinder are better as is general performance and responsiveness. Zoom is fantastic with a pretty decent lens. Captures at distances my D7100 18-200mm won’t touch. Quality isn’t as good as the SLR but it’s what I expect from this camera and I’d use it in combination with the SLR depending on the scenario. All in all, pretty happy.

This camera is an alternative to my SLR and the long zoom means I no longer have to worry about changing lenses on the move. Is the picture quality as good as my SLR – probably. To use the zoom at very long distances youโll need a sturdy tripod. I havenโt tried the moon setting yet but the bird setting is really good. Weirdly the photos are better on the computer and printed than they are on the cameras screen so donโt be tempted to delete until youโve looked at them on other media.

Camera optical and image quality is all they say it is. The 125 zoom works very well and the stabilzation is amazing so pictures at full zoom are possible handheld. There is also digital zoom taking the effective zoom to 500x !!

Battery life just taking stills. 75-100 stills and the battery need replacing. I have now brought an additional charger and 2 more batteries. My Canon SLR can take 250+ stills on a charge with no problem. This is why I’ve given it 4 instead of 5 stars. If you are going sight seeing for a day would recommend taking several batteries.

Firstly, overall, the P1000 is good camera. I have a couple of stunning pictures of the moon already and cannot fault it for those pictures that require the camera to be tilted back. There is however, a serious flaw that is only apparent when you have the camera on a tripod with the lens fully extended in the horizontal position. I have invested in a very sturdy German made FLM tripod along with a Sirui K-40X ball head. These two together will hold many, many times the weight of the P1000. The flaw is in the way the camera fits to the head plate. When the camera is horizontal and you zoom in to the full 3000mm and then lock the head, there is a “fall” that takes the subject completely out of the viewfinder. After talking to a specialist camera shop and trying every thing that was available it became clear that the movement was between the camera and the plate. Expensive but been an amateur, I tend to use the auto mostly.
And the images are as good,if not better than my NikonD5300.
