This may be unfair, I’ve not used a ‘proper’ camera for years and perhaps they are all similar and this one, that so many people love, compares well to similar models.

Having spent a good deal of money on a new phone because it’s got a very good camera, I wanted an even better camera that isn’t too big. This seemed as if it’d be perfect.

It’s bigger than I expected and heavier – I hoped it’s performance would excel and I’d make a place for it… Hmmm needing to carry a bag…

I was surprised just how small and extremely cluttered the screen is – and how non-functional and slow it is compared to one on the most basic smart phone. Too small to properly look at an image. It needs to be the full size of the camera back and the silly physical rocker controls moved to the front or incorporated.

Good though it could be to have physical dials, and the one to alter the exposure was handy, I found them awkward. And the silly mock sound of the loud, shutter closing that can be turned off on some…

I researched a lot of cameras before choosing this one. Photography is my passion and for the past 3 years I’d been using my phone as the camera I had wasn’t easy to use and just triggered my anxiety. This one is perfect… so easy to use with the added bonus of WiFi so rather than having to transfer to my laptop I can just send them straight to my phone. The auto focus and image stabilising are great and I’m really happy with the photos I take. Battery life is very good too. In time I will start experimenting with the manual settings but for now the auto one has made taking photos a real pleasure. The size is perfect too… not too heavy and cumbersome.

I first got into Olympus with a Mark III version of this camera as a more pocketable body than the DSLRs of my other brand. Over time I found I was using the Olympus more and more and my other brand less. To begin with I had ‘kit’ zooms, but my picture shows some of the high quality primes I’ve added since. This range of gear may be small but they are not toys!

When this Mark IV version was launched with the 20mp sensor it became a ‘must-have’ upgrade for me as it puts this tiny beaut in DSLR territory. The new sensor is both shaper and smoother than it’s 16mp predecessor.

The camera is as easy to use as you want it to be, with a range of Scene and Auto options. Or, when you get the hang of it there’s a fuller range of fine-tuning options available for Manual operation.

This camera uses the M4/3 system, so there’s plenty of scope to add other lenses, bodies and accessories from not only Olympus but also Panasonic, Lumix and 3rd Party options. But within Olympus there’s also an upgrade…
