I needed this desperately as I am working from home. Suffice it to say it failed me.
First the positives: The fingerprint ID worked well. The device is very portable, light and well built. It’s also incredibly compact, but as you’ll see below that might be a mixed blessing in that it heats up.
And therein lies the rub. I attempted to move the data from a mechanical HD onto the device in Mac OS – the very first use of the device. There was about 330 GB or so to transfer. The first 100GB went amazingly quick, but thereafter the device heated up and crawled to a halt (I wonder if the device has insufficient heat dissipation and is baking components to the point of failure). Now the device does not mount at all except a read-only partition with the Mac OS software etc. The crappy Mac OS app just gives an error message like ‘No free space found or volume not found.’ and no option to simply reformat the SSD and start over. I have made arrangements to return the device and I have to say I…

The product advertises as touch based but is actually password based, the password security is limited to 16 characters and you can’t use a password manager to copy and paste a secure password in.
You can register multiple fingers, but to do any of what I’ve so far described you have to install an application which has never been updated inspite of these issues and will likely stop working with future versions of the operating system leaving you with a drive that depended on software Samsung likely has no interest in maintaining once this product is discontinued.
Will be returning it as not fit for purpose.

To all intents and purposes this seems almost as fast as the internal 1TB SSD drive on my Mac Pro. It isnโt as quick, but you donโt notice much difference. Works great as a โkeep-me-goingโ backup drive loaded with Catalina for when emergencies strike. The only downside is it gets a bit hot when writing several hundred GB of data without respite, but then they all do, IME … so we sort of have to assume thatโs probably OK. And how often do we all write several hundred GB of data in one go? Highly recommended.

Fantastic device. Small and light, so very portable. Very quick and quiet when in use so great for adding extra storage. Fingerprint sensor is great to have, but you pay a price premium for this feature versus other SSD. I had some issues with the drivers for my mac, the driver installed with the T7 didn’t work so the software didn’t recognise the drive when connected. Fixed this by downloading the latest driver from Samsung, and you can find a video on YouTube showing the step by step instructions. Avoid Samsung customer services, who were useless.

T7 Touch Portable SSD – 1 TB – USB 3.2 Gen.2 External SSD Metallic Black is very easy to use, it didn’t come with any software included that I could find, but, it still only allows you to utilise 931GBs in total, which is fine for me to play my PC games on. I downloaded my Payware stuff from Steam with no problems, although, if you unplug your SSD from your computer, your games become deactivated, so, maybe it’s best to leave your SSD plugged in all the time, unless you need to clean your computer, or, something similar. An excellent product from Samsung, very small with a blue LED light on the front to show you when it’s working. I had a small problem as the cable included with this is only a USB-C connector so I had to obtain another cable off Amazon for ยฃ11 to make my old PC recognise the USB3.2 port, which wasn’t difficult, so far it’s all plain sailing and I’m a satisfied gamer. I haven’t done a comparison test with moving files over, with anything else, but, the files I’ve…

I bought this to replace a regular HD – and as an extra accessory alongside my MacBook with the new Apple Silicone M1 Chip.
The drive appears in the finder, and can be used as a regular SSD – out of the box, it appears in the finder as normal – but the T7 Touch Software as available from Samsung does not work with the new Apple Silicone M1 Macs. Therefore you are unable to set up the fingerprint reading software. I’ve spoken directly to Samsung about this, they have confirmed it is not supported and couldn’t give me a timeline for remediation.
As the main reason you’d buy one of these, paying more than for a reguar SSD, is for the fingerprint security scanner – the fact you can’t set it up makes it very bad value for Money.
A workaround is to set it up on another PC (I was able to borrow one from a friend). Once set up, the fingerprint software works on the device so you won’t need the management software installed for it to work.
