I bought this 4TB drive after buying a previous external drive from Seagate which failed after three months… This drive crashed the very first time I used it. After wasting an hour putting data onto the drive itโ€™s now impossible to write to , copy or delete data from the drive. I canโ€™t send the drive back since it has confidential data on – so Iโ€™m left with a useless broken external drive and have to start the long process of trying to get a refund without sending the drive back… save yourself the bother and buy a more reliable product.
Update: after calling the Seagate helpline their advice was โ€˜openโ€™ the external drive and try to remove the drive (god knows how since the external drive is sealed..) and then take it to a technician and wipe the disc clean then send the broken product back to them. Itโ€™s absolutely laughable. So Seagate are happy to waste my time and my money taking this to someone to delete the drive before returning It. If you think this is a hassle youโ€™re…

There does seem to be quite a few negative reviews for Segate drives in general here.

I have no connection with Segate nor any other vested interest, but I would say I’ve had literally dozens of their drives over the years and only ever had one failure.

Also worth pointing out that almost every other make and model have similar comments, if not quite as many. I guess people are more likely to post negative comments when they have suffered a failure of some kind?

More recently, I’ve been using these 2.5″ USB 5TB drives for video library use. They don’t get hammered, but do cope perfectly well for this fairly demanding use.

No storage device is ever 100% reliable nor lasts forever. So, whilst I do sympathise with those folk who have lost valuable data, I would always advocate BACKUP, BACKUP and BACKUP!

Generally, have AT LEAST one copy of everything, preferably kept in another physical location. That way, when the inevitable eventually happens, you won’t get that deep sick feeling that…

    ** UPDATE NOV 2020 **

After 15 months of ownership and fewer than 30 power-on cycles, the drive began producing errors:

    05 000000000008 Reallocated Sectors Count
    BB 000000000033 Reported Uncorrectable Errors
C5 000000000010 Current Pending Sector Count
    C6 000000000010 Uncorrectable Sector Count

I immediately ran SeaTools (several times, with computer reboots in between) but it failed on all occasions:

    SeaTools Test Code: E1D36CEE
    SMART – Started 14/10/2020 20:53:35
    SMART – Pass 14/10/2020 20:53:41
    Short DST – Started 14/10/2020 21:29:56
    Short DST – FAIL 14/10/2020 21:30:09
    Fix All Long – Started 14/10/2020 21:31:04
    Fix All Long – Started 14/10/2020 22:11:36
    Fix All Long – FAIL 15/10/2020 13:36:47
    FAIL

So I initiated an Amazon return as the drive is still under warranty. Whilst moving its contents to a different drive, only one file failed to copy. Again, hugely long process. When the drive was finally erased (files deleted – not formatted, as I understand this might clear SMART errors) it was…

  4. Amazon Customer

Bought this portable hard drive to use with my playstation 4 to extend its storage capacity.
Came within the time stated and was well packaged in clear hard plastic packaging inside the usual amazon box.
Literally just plugged it into a spare usb slot on the front of the ps4 and it was recognized straight away.
Ps4 formatted it and asked if I wanted to use as main storage and I was all done.
Definitely recommend. My son has had a Seagate portable drive for his ps4 for more than a year and no problems (and it is heavily used). We have also taken it away with us when it was not possible to surgically remove him from his ps4 and it still works fine.
