I have been a photographer since I was 10 years old and was also developing and printing Black & White photos at that age too.
Moving on, and many years later I was a professional photographer with 2 studios and had the usual professional cameras too, Canon, Bronica and Hasselblad, and of course took at least 2 big camera bags full of lenses, flashguns and filters along too on assignments.
Things then moved on, not only in photography itself but also in my own personal photography needs too.
I got rid of the Bronica’s and big Canon cameras and went initially of smaller Canon Cameras such as the EOS 700D but I still wasn’t happy lugging loads of stuff about, I had done enough of that and although having a top end Smart Phone, the camera was lacking the control that I was used to and needed.
It was at this point I had a major rethink and got that ‘Eureka’ moment – firstly 99% of people don’t enlarge photos to a large size, rarely bigger than A4 in most instances, and I am no exception…

I purchased this as a supplement to my RX100 mkVa for its extended zoom range and miniscule size. Knowing its size and zoom etc bought with it a compromise in sensor size my expectations were not too high. I’d not had much opportunity to use the camera in the weeks since buying but did manage to shoot a little 4k video with at near max optical zoom last weekend and was extremely impressed with the image quality. Compared with the larger sensor size of the RX100, M43 and APSC cameras I’ve used the still images don’t permit comparable enlargement but given the very compact size against equivalents in the larger sensor cameras this can be overlooked. In good light the aforementioned shortcomings are less obvious
Pros
Compact size
Extreme zoom range
Excellent 4k video (though limited to approx 5mins in 4k)
Viewfinder handy
Battery compatibility with the RX100 range
Image quality given small sensor size
Fantastic travel and all in one solution
Cons
Build quality compared to RX100 mk Va (but given…

I needed a pocketable camera for walks. The picture quality varies a lot. Due to the light changing rapidly I tend to set it at 200iso and 1/250 l. I use the exposure compensation quite often to adjust fine light. The camera worked very well in bright direct sunlight. The heron is on Max clear zoom setting and although it’s not crystal clear it is obvious what you are looking at. The eyepiece takes a bit of getting used to, it is tiny, but I would set it up and leave it and operate the on/off button to avoid the need to keep opening and setting the eyepiece. It’s a fun point and shoot, no way can it compete with a camera with a larger sensor, but for quick snaps it’s ideal. It also makes you focus your attention to setting the shot up properly if you’re trying to mimic a higher quality camera. Take the time to adjust the settings and it’s worth while.

Have not yet used the camera but wished to comment on the scrappy box and flimsy leaflets that come with the camera. I do not believe these are the result of ecological considerations, just very mean and poor finish to the product. The box is covered in tiny written information such as, for example, the camera ‘may get warm but this is normal’ – all seemingly random afterthoughts added to wherever a bit of space could be found. The Sony website has a ‘What’s in the Box’ paragraph which states a manual is included, but there is no manual included: just a reference to the web version, and some bits of paper, brief start up details, standard warnings and guarantee info. As a compact digital camera, this is a very expensive camera dressed down to look like a cheap cut price one. I just hope the performance of the camera is vastly better than the image presented by its packaging and paperwork.
