You obviously aren’t going to get the image quality of a high end DSLR and prime lens with such a small package and at a fraction of the cost, but I’ve been pretty impressed with the images so far and it is so much lighter and a bit smaller than an SLR, it isn’t a chore to carry it around all day It is also very easy to use, but you can also be creative with full manual controls. Don’t think you can shoot in RAW though, but the jpegs are good enough for my needs.

The kingfisher (blue bird) image was shot at full optical zoom hand held and the image is cropped to about 60%. It struggled a bit with the auto focus on this one due to all the branches but came out ok – this was the best of about 10 shots, some had a bit more camera shake and a couple weren’t focussed. I tried the manual focus assist, but auto focus still trumped it. The deer was shot full zoom hand held in evening light, so I think the camera coped well to avoid too much shake in the low light, I think the inbuilt image…

After owning, and still got a Nikon D90, which I still have and use, I wanted a “travel camera” with GPS recording and a decent fixed lens zoom.

    This is a fantastic camera.
    PROS
The weight is 1/2, some nice intelligent features, HD video, amazing throughout the zoom range., wifi VERY easy to transfer to Android deice. Easy to give to anybody passing by , so they can take a picture (over a DSLR). Good quality pictures. A bit noisy, but fine in good light.

    cons
A physical switch is much better, or at least 2 separate buttons, as the same button for on/off is a real pain. A better button for switching from view finder to main display.
Battery life not great and certainly not as good as specifications suggest. (get a spare battery)
Slow taking pictures (compared to DSLR)), not usually a problem, unless want so take pictures quickly

I bought this camera before going for a trip to Morocco. I am completely amateur, but I like photography and decided to buy it to register our trips. Before buying I checked with my cousin who is a professional photographer, which one is the best option among SONY DSC H400/ SONY DSC HX400/ CANON POWERSHOT SX540/ NIKON COOLPIX B700/ and he suggested me to buy this cam (SONY DSC HX400). He said the lens are really good, and there are loads of set ups options really useful. After buying it I started reading and watching more videos about photograph, and as far I am satisfied with its results. I’ve taken nice shots, but I am still learning more about the cam.

I normally use DSLR’s but going on holiday so wanted something a little more portable, having done a boat load of research i decided to buy one of these and don’t regret it at all.
Really easy to use while still having all the bits and bobs that you are used to with a DSLR, fantastic zoom great quality pictures and really my only complaint is that it doesn’t do RAW, but to be fair i can live with that.
