Any nearly geek or above, will know that Western Digital Black is ‘where its at’. Fast spinning gets you fast read and writes and when I compared this to my WD eBooks it did not dissapoint. Even comparing it to my internal 1TB it performed excellently for read and write speeds, acquiring at least 4x the results somehow (perhaps I need an internal upgrade). Unfortuntely my dreams of installing all my games onto this and using it as advertised “an external game drive” were quickly dashed when I booted up various games to find them randomly freeze. Worrying my system was struggling I messed with a few settings to realise that my rig is fine, the game is just struggling to access the data on the drive now and then causing it to hang and frezze. I would like to try some different ports to see if that has an effect but my gut is telling me that its still just a limit of the tech atm. In general though I am very happy with my purchase and its already become invaluable for storing footage….

So, I own a LOT of storage devices (HDDs, SSDs, Flash memory devices of all kinds). No, really… I own a LOT of storage devices (over 0.25PB… yes… PETABYTES… in total)

So, when I bought this WD Black 8TB drive to use as a primary “Working Drive” for my video editing work, I was expecting much of what was advertised. I was expecting the drive to be high-performance (it woefully isn’t, even on a Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3 connection).
I was expecting the drive to be MODERN (i.e…. quiet)… it is not! This thing is louder than my vacuum cleaner (no, I’m not exaggerating… it clicks and clunks all the time, even when not being actively used, and you can literally hear it when vacuuming the office!)
It takes FOREVER to spin up! Seriously… I turn the power on, then walk into the kitchen to make myself a coffee… because it takes so long to spin up, I might as well!

But now we get the worst part… the most indefensible part of this thing: it is less reliable than a plumber’s…

First of is that, this comes surprisingly good being colored black. It has the usual packaging like most external hard disk does. The build quality is good but you can feel that the actual part isnt as durable as other external hdd. You can press the middle part of the hard disk with your thumb. So avoid pressing it hard as much as you can. Connecting the hard drive is plug and play on my Windows 10 Laptop. Although I have not tried installing competitive games yet but I have tried transferring large files and games on it and it was blazing fast compared to my other hdds. So this is very useful for my gaming laptop and I do no need to upgrade my internal HDD.

Its definitely worth the price considering this is aimed for the large files games.

Bought this at a little more than the same price of entry-level drives with a black Friday offer. The drive comes in a nice black metal shell, but no carrying bag or anything else but the bare drive and cable are provided. I have been pretty disappointed by the performances; from the name and gaming marketing I supposed this contained a black series 7200rpm drive, while it’s a simple 5400rpm one. Claims over 100MB/s while reading, I verified the number in a benchmark test (big file, continuous read) but real life numbers are a lot smaller, up to 50MB/s read for a number of large files and while transferring smaller files to the drive (I use it for high resolution pictures storage) you’ll see the usual 30MB/s that you can reach more or less with any magnetic unit on the market right now. Overall it works, no software issues, no power issues even with an old computer that sometimes failed to give enough power to other usb drives, but buy this one only if it’s on offer or if in your…

I was torn between getting an external ssd which would be quicker but much much smaller, or a larger slower more traditional external drive.

I opted for this mainly because of the trust in western digital products and the size. I’m using it on my Xbox one. Works perfectly and I’m glad I went for it over the ssd. Games these days are getting 100gb plus. I’ve got the fastest internet I can get in our area and it still takes ages to download the games so this allows me to keep them for longer without having to re download.

When you subscribe to game pass it allows you to just queue up a load of games to play and not worry about space.

The games load quick enough for me not to worry about speed. The Xbox really should have come with 4tb as standard.
